Around Campus: Fall Sports Preview

Eat ’em up! Bobcats ready for final
fall season in Southland Conference

Texas State’s final fall sports season in the Southland Conference will give Bobcats fans a taste of what’s in store for 2012, when the university joins the Western Athletic Conference.

On the football field, Texas State will launch home-and-home series with Football Bowl Subdivision teams Texas Tech and Wyoming in 2011. The volleyball team will play in four major tournaments against opponents from coast to coast. And the soccer team has matches scheduled against programs from the Big 12, Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference.

Football
The Bobcats will open Coach Dennis Franchione’s second tenure as head football coach in Lubbock on Sept. 3 with the program’s first matchup against Texas Tech.

Franchione was 13-9 as the coach at Texas State in 1990-91 and is 187-101-2 for his career, which includes head coaching positions at Southwestern College, Pittsburg State, New Mexico, TCU, Alabama and Texas A&M. His teams have won eight conference championships and one divisional title in 25 seasons.

The Bobcats also will travel to Laramie, Wyo., for a game against the Wyoming Cowboys before the home opener against Tarleton State on Sept. 17. Southland Conference games begin Sept. 24 at Stephen F. Austin. View the complete football schedule here.

Volleyball
The volleyball team will get an early look at one of the top programs in the WAC when the Bobcats travel to Utah State’s tournament Sept. 2-3. The Aggies were the conference’s representative in the NCAA tournament last season.

The Bobcats are looking to return to the NCAA tournament after falling just short in the SLC tournament title last year. Texas State will take on two other NCAA tournament teams in 2011, meeting Austin Peay at the Alabama Tournament and defending SLC champion UTSA in the conference opener Sept. 22. View the complete volleyball schedule here.

Soccer
The Texas State soccer team also will be shooting for a return to the NCAA tournament after falling in overtime in the semifinals of the conference tournament in 2010.

Texas State has home games scheduled against TCU of the Mountain West Conference, UT-El Paso of Conference USA and future WAC rival Louisiana Tech. The Bobcats also will travel to Waco to play Baylor in a non-conference game.

Southland Conference play opens Sept. 30 against Sam Houston, and the conference tournament will be Nov. 3-6 at Natchitoches, La. View the complete soccer schedule here.

  1. We would like to go to the SFA game and want to know if anyone will be going to tailgate? Does anyone know about hotel rooms set aside? It is parents weekend and I can’t find a hotel in Nac only about 50 miles away. Please send me a note if there are any rooms on hold that we might be able to take one. sb68 THANKS! Stacy
