Looking back: Three unforgettable years at Texas State University

Once on campus, I hoped to take advantage of my time as an undergraduate.

As I look back on my three years at Texas State University — I’m about to graduate with my bachelor’s degree in journalism on May 11 — an eruption of mixed feelings floods my memory.

I feel excitement when I recall my first day on campus as a freshman. Fresh out of high school from McAllen, Texas, attending Texas State was the next big step in my life. While traversing the steps of the beautiful, foreign campus, the promise of adventure kept me eager for new experiences. As I became a seasoned Bobcat, my expectations to meet new people, explore new ideas and grow as a person were consistently met.

Bobcat Faces: Benjamin Trevino

Agriculture senior cultivates career protecting future of Texas lands

Have you ever dropped a whole packet of seeds into a tiny pot of soil? They all may sprout and they all may grow, but if you want them to thrive, you need to thin the seedlings, giving them ample space and access to resources.

Benjamin Trevino, who will graduate from Texas State University in May with bachelor’s degree in agriculture–animal science, felt lost in the weeds when he attended a larger Texas university just out of high school. He studied for only two years before he joined the workforce as a medical equipment sales rep. During that brief hiatus, he learned a valuable life lesson.

“At that time, I figured that school was not that important, so I went and worked, and then the real world hit me in the face,” says Trevino. “As clichéd as it sounds, I realized that money doesn’t grow on trees. Education actually is important.” Continue reading

to take place Friday, Saturday

More than the fall 2011 semester is drawing to a close for a select group of Texas State students participating in commencement exercises this weekend.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, Texas State will host the first of four commencement ceremonies in Strahan Coliseum for the colleges of Education and Health Professions. At 2 p.m., the College of Liberal Arts and University College will participate in exercises, followed by the colleges of Fine Arts and Communication and Applied Arts at 6 p.m. A final ceremony, at 10 a.m. Saturday, is for students in the McCoy College of Business Administration and the College of Science and Engineering.
