For retired Texas State University professor Dr. Ron Jager and his wife Marie, life has been full of “little coincidences” that have kept them serving the San Marcos community for over 30 years. With a passion to help others, the Jagers have always found a helping hand to keep them motoring onward.

“We’ve always come into what we needed in some way or another,” Ron says. “We’ve been full of little coincidences that have taken place here [in San Marcos]. Something happens that’s connected with people and other places that come here to roost.”

From the single mother who makes life-changing decisions each day to the military commander leading troops into battle, leadership comes in many forms. For Dr. Ani Yazedjian – faculty member of Texas State’s School of Family and Consumer Science and a member of the 2012 Leadership Texas Class – leadership is a learning process.

Yazedjian was selected to join the elite network of over 5,000 women as a member of the 2012 Leadership Texas Class in January 2012. The theme for this year’s class is “Texas Women Leaders: On the Highway to a Fast, Forward Future.” With a background in lifespan development and family relationships, Yazedjian is bringing her research to the forefront as an inspirational woman leader.

From world honors to local harmony, Mungo makes music at Texas State

Many people may think of Bugs Bunny’s interpretation of Richard Wagner when they envision the opera; however, according to Dr. Samuel Mungo — director of Opera Studies and Coordinator of Voice Area at Texas State — opera is quite attainable.

“We all have this concept of opera that it is this inaccessible, high and mighty, hoity-toity thing,” Mungo says. “I’m kind of the Joe Sixpack of opera. It’s musicals, only they sing more.”

So attainable is opera, in fact, that Mungo has dedicated his 20-year career to it. From the music halls of universities to premier stages around the world, Mungo has transformed a love of the opera to a standing ovation.

Texas State faculty prepare and serve breakfast favorites to students at the Moonlight Breakfast.

With books stacked high and tension even higher, finals week at Texas State is a stressful time for students. On Tuesday, Dec. 6, students can blow off steam before finals at Texas State’s annual Moonlight Breakfast — yes, breakfast at night — at Jones Food Court from 9-11 p.m.

For nearly 30 years, the Moonlight Breakfast has served as a staple for students to unwind with friends over a comforting morning meal cooked and served by Texas State faculty and staff.

Dr. Audwin Anderson has spent his career exploring the complexities of human interactions. As a professor and graduate advisor at Texas State University specializing in the sociology of law, his research usually focuses on subjects like jury service, social justice and social power within the criminal justice system. But in a new documentary, he sails into another area of academic interest: sports history.

Whitewash is filmmaker Ted Woods’ examination of the history and contributions of African-Americans in the world of surfing. In the film, Anderson provides commentary on the history of African-Americans in sports.
