Texas State Updates: Mariachi

Texas State wins group, vocal
divisions at Mariachi competition

Texas State’s Mariachi Nueva Generacíon was named the top group at the 16th annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza on Saturday at San Antonio’s Municipal Auditorium.

Singers from the university also swept the top three spots in the vocal competition, with Vanessa Moreno finishing first, Amy Zuniga second and Karen Zavala third.

Mariachi is part of the Multicultural Music Area at the School of Music at Texas State.

The competition featured Mariachi groups and vocalists from colleges, high schools and middle schools, with vocalists from elementary schools also competing.

The Berklee School of Music from Boston finished second in the college division and UT-San Antonio was third. Rio Grande City took the high school division, followed by San Antonio Fox Tech and Roma. Veterans Middle School of Rio Grande City won the middle school division, followed by San Antonio’s Austin Academy and Irving Academy.
