Texas State graduate honored
for contributions in California

Rita Garcia

Rita Garcia, a 2006 cum laude graduate of Texas State, received the Tracey Miller Merit Award recently from the Alliance for Women in Media in Southern California.

Garcia, whose degree is in mass communication and Spanish, is a freelance reporter for KCAL/KCBS, the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles. She also has worked at KRGV in Harlingen and was an intern at National Public Radio in Washington, D.C.

The Tracey Miller Merit Award honors an alliance member “who has shown an outstanding commitment to AWRT, the chapter, and who has made positive contributions to the broadcasting industry,” according to the organization’s website. Miller, a veteran electronic journalist, died in 2005 at the age of 51.

Garcia served as news director of Bobcat Update while at the university. She is a native of Austin.
