The Texas State baseball team clinched its third Southland Conference title in a row over the weekend, but it isn’t the only successful ballclub on campus.

The Bobcats club team, one of 25 sports clubs sponsored by the Department of Campus Recreation, will be competing in the National Club Baseball Association Division II tournament beginning Friday in Johnstown. Pa.

Texas State opens the tournament against Penn State, which finished second at the national tournament last year.

Texas State is the NCBA District VII champion, and the team is 15-6 this season, 14-4 in district games.

Club president Zach Chirtos said he, vice president Jake Reagan and treasurer Colin Gordon recruited players during orientation last summer and around campus in the fall.

“Most of our players have played baseball all their lives, and a few have experience in junior college ball,” says Chirtos, a junior from Katy who plays the middle infield positions.

The team also recruited Jake Steiner, a former member of the Bobcats varsity, to pitch and play the outfield, Chirtos says.

Fifteen players are going to Pennsylvania for the tournament, which runs through Tuesday. Wyoming is the No. 1 seed in the field, followed by Penn State, Furman University, Longwood University, Hofstra University, Wisconsin, Texas State and Central Missouri.
