Today is the 59th birthday of Texas State graduate George Strait, who launched what many consider the most successful country music career ever while a student in San Marcos.

According to his official website, he is spending the day fishing with his wife Norma.

Strait holds the record for the most No. 1 singles in recording history in any genre with 57, and every one of his albums has achieved at least gold status with the Recording Industry Association of America.

He graduated from the university in 1979 with a degree in agriculture and was honored as a distinguished alumnus in 1986.
