Happenings: Pack It Up, Pass It On

‘Pass It On’ program connects
campus, city through free shopping

It’s almost shopping day for Texas State University’s annual Pack It Up and Pass It On, an annual program that allows students to leave behind items they no longer want to benefit San Marcos residents in need.

Last year, residence hall students filled five storage units with thousands of useful items, including clothes, shoes, toys, furniture, electronics, unopened toiletries, non-perishable food, computers, household items and books. More than 1,000 clients from United Way of Hays County agencies then shopped for free in the “store” set up in the LBJ Student Center Ballroom. Approximately seven tons of useful items went to new homes instead of area landfills.

Although on-campus collections ended in May, Texas State students, faculty and staff as well as community members can still donate items and volunteer time to the Pack It Up and Pass It On event.

Donate gently used items in good condition.
Clean out your closets, garages and storage areas. Call the Texas State Office of Community Relations at 512.245.9645 to make arrangements to deliver your donation at the office’s on-campus storage unit through Friday, July 29; or bring donations to the LBJ Student Center Ballroom Aug. 1-3 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. No pick-up assistance is available.

Help with sorting and setup.
Spend a few hours or days helping sort items in the LBJ Student Center Ballroom. Sorting and setup will take place Aug. 1-3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (It’s fun in an “archeological” kind of way, and provides great opportunities for team building.)

Help on Shopping Day.
Share your time to assist clients on Shopping Day, Thursday, Aug. 4, 6-11 a.m. in the LBJ Student Center Ballroom. Community Relations needs volunteers to take admission tickets, hand out bags, manage pickup of large items, help with evaluations and clean up.

If you would like to help, contact the Office of Community Relations at communityrelations@txstate.edu or 512.245.9645. Volunteer shifts are flexible enough to meet any schedule. Community service documentation will be provided. Visit www.txstate.edu/community for more information.
