Happenings: Holiday Season at Texas State

Bobcats bake up holiday spirit in Gingerbread House Contest

By Catherine Harper

Each holiday season, Bobcats gather to deck the halls with boughs of holly, tinsel and gingerbread — houses, that is. Starting Monday, Nov. 28, through Thursday, Dec. 1, Texas State’s University Bookstore will host the 10th annual Gingerbread House Contest to fire up the holiday spirit among students, faculty and the community.

The Gingerbread House Contest starts off the season of festive events at Texas State, leading up to the University Bookstore’s Holiday Open House on Thursday, Dec. 1.

The holiday contest invites the Texas State community to submit their most palatable architectural creations with the guideline that all parts must be edible. Each gingerbread house will be ranked among categories including Texas State students, faculty, departments and children of the first three categories.

For the sweetest creations, a panel of judges will award prizes including University Bookstore $75 gift cards for adult winners and $25 for children. Applicants can drop off their submissions at the University Bookstore Service Center until 9 a.m. on Dec. 1, with winners to be announced later that day at 1 p.m. during the University Bookstore’s Holiday Open House. All entrants will receive a special “thank you” gift when they submit their gingerbread creation.

The holiday contest serves as a spirited start to the season, with more festivities at the Holiday Open House, which lasts until 3 p.m. that day. With refreshments provided by the University Bookstore, the Holiday Open House invites the Texas State community to share in the cheer of the holidays with Boko the Bobcat, sugary treats and gifts galore.

Starting at 10:30 a.m., begin the holiday merriment with Texas State’s favorite Bobcat at the Storytime with Boko event, gathering the Texas State community for holiday stories, treats and photo ops in the University Bookstore. Then make a festive treat at the “Decorate Your Own Sugar Cookie” station in the bookstore’s art department.

Ornaments, holiday cards and other gifts also will be available at the Holiday Open House providing gift ideas for all Bobcats. Check out some of the University Bookstore’s gifted discounts here.

In support of Texas State’s furriest fans, the Can Do Pet Food Drive will also commence in the spirit of giving at the Holiday Open House. Through Dec. 9, the University Bookstore will offer 25% off all Texas State apparel in exchange for three non-perishable pet food items.
